EXPRESSIONS with "TIME"
- ahead of your time = be more talented than other recognize. Which scientist in the pass was so ahead of his time that he could predict that one day people would be able to fly?
- at all times = always. Students need to pay attention at all times.
- be in time for something = to come at the right time to do or get it. I was just in time for the movie; it was about to start.
- be on time = to be punctual. Henry is never late for football practice;he's always on time.
- behind the times = not fashionable. not up on current fashions.Anna dresses like it was the 70s. She's behind the times!
- bide one's time = to wait for the right time. Danny is biding his time to get back at the school bully.
- buy time = to gain time. When it was bedtime. Little john tried to buy time by asking his mom to help him find his teddy bear first.
- do/serve time = to be in prison. He was serving time for bank robbery.
- for the time being = for now for the time being. we don't accept new students. Come again a month from now; we might start a new class.
- from time to time = occasionally. The baby is asleep,but make sure to check on him from time to time.
- have (give someone) a hard time = to have (give someone) an unpleasant or difficult experience. I always have a hard time understanding what native speakers say. My mom gave me a hard time when i came with a bad school report.
- have the time of your life = have a fantastic experience. The kids had the time of their lives watching the circus clown doing his stuff.
- in no time = very soon. When the ice cream vendor appeared, all the children ran to him and were licking ice cream cones in no time.
- in the nick of time =just before it would have been too late. He got on the bus in the nick of time. It started moving the moment he got on it.
- keep time = keep the beat in music. It's hard for jimmy to learn to dance because he can't keep time.
- kill time = to do someting in order to make time pass more quickly. The students tried to kill time chatting on their smartphone while waiting for the teacher to arrive.
- live on borrowed time = live dangerously. As a stuntman performing hazardous acts, Tommy was living on borrowed time.
- out of time = not have anymore time available. you can't hand in your work next week; you'll be out of time, The deadline is tomorrow.
- pressed for time = not have a lot of time to do something. Please,Alex,not now. I'm pressed for time, call me tomorrow, okay?
- race against time = so as to finish before a certain time. The people were racing against time trying to save their belongings before the flood reached their home.
- take your time = not to hurry. We still have plenty of time before we leave for the theater,so take your time finishing your assignment first.
- tell time = to read the clock. So, tell me, Randy, you're only two years old, but can you already tell the time?
- time is money = expression meaning that someone's time is important. Hey Dawson, time is money; stop joking around and get back to work!
